"The result is not just a political realignment, but also that local forms of Chinese expression, as indeed local forms of Chinese identity, are increasingly marginalized within the sinophone world in favour of a standard way of speaking and feeling that is imported from China."

This is a very interesting idea. It was part of my "hypothesis" when I started out on my dissertation filed work in Burma (mostly Mandalay) and along the Burma-China border. But I found that despite the economic realignment towards the PRC, in terms of identity most of the Sino-Burmese I encountered see themselves as different from mainlanders and often there is a bit of animosity even, perhaps especially, from those who have lived, worked and studied in the PRC. So while economically, and in other institutional terms (media, education) the PRC influence is obviously growing at least in my experience in Upper Burma the PRC-centered "standard way of speaking and feeling" was not getting the same traction at the level of group and individual identity claims. And this was exactly the opposite of what I had expected to find.
