Heinrich Boell Foundation study on China as an actor in the Mekong region

Rethinking Investments in Natural Resources: China’s Emerging Role in the Mekong Region has recently been commissioned by the Heinrich Boell Foundation (the foundation of the German Green party), the WWF and the Winnipeg-based IISD. A policy brief based on the study has been released, and the study itself — a useful summary of the data and documentation available, though without original field research — can be downloaded from the www.laofab.org website.

The policy brief praises China for developing social and environmental guidelines for ODA and FDI, and while noting that these guidelines exist mainly on paper, points out that their leverage lies in the fact that companies that violate them can be held accountable not only under local but also under Chinese law.
