New York Times on China’s popularity in Indonesia

An article by Edward Wong in today’s International Herald Tribune  discusses the rising popularity of China in Indonesia, focusing on a regent in rural Java who mandated that all secondary schools in his district teach Chinese. His point is that Indonesia is a test case for China’s “soft power” because of the long-standing anti-Chinese sentiments and suspicion of China.
