PhD scholarship on Lake Victoria East Africa Trade Development Zone

Sandra Evers at the anthropology department of the Free University (VU) Amsterdam is submitting a grant application for ethnographic research on large-scale land acquisitions in Africa. One of the subprojects is on the Lake Victoria East Africa Trade Development Zone as a case study of land concessions obtained by Chinese companies. The focus of this study should be on the interactions between managerial and developmental ideals and practices espoused by Chinese managers, workers and entrepreneurs and local officials and workers, and the impact of these on techniques of governance. This subproject is to be carried out as a PhD dissertation project, to be supervised by Pal Nyiri in the event funding is granted, and carries a scholarship.
Fluency in Chinese and English and demonstrated familiarity with ethnographic methods are essential; a background in anthropology is desirable.
Interested candidates for this PhD scholarship should send their CVs to p.d.nyiri (at) before 29 August.
